Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team dropped its third straight contest on Wednesday, falling on the road at Skidmore in non-conference action.

The Spartans now sit at 1-3 on the season after completing the fourth game of a five-game road slate to open the season. Skidmore improves to 2-0 on the year with the win. The Thoroughbreds outshot Castleton 33-7 on the day, including 26-7 on goal. The Skidmore defense caused problems for the Spartans all day, as Castleton was just 6-for-21 clearing the ball while Skidmore was 14-for-18. Skidmore also won the ground ball battle 25-17 and had a 13-6 edge in draw controls.

Lacey Greenamyre scored Castleton's only goal on the evening, converting a free-position shot in the first half to get the Spartans on the board. Greenamyre also had five draw controls and four ground balls to lead the team in both categories. Kimberly McCarthy registered two caused turnovers and two ground balls in addition to three shots on goal, while Madelyn Cote collected three ground balls of her own in the loss. Raven Payne shouldered the loss, making seven saves in the contest.

Amelia Bassett scored four times for Skidmore and was one of four players to notch four points or more on the day. Avery Geddes had two goals and three assists for a five-point day, while Maeve McKinley (2g, 2a) and Madelyn Marr (1g, 3a) had four points each. Gabriella Modesti finished the day with a hat trick, and Becca Leopold and Sophia Craco had two goals each. Phoebe Beshlian earned the win in goal, playing 30 minutes and making two saves with one goal against.

Skidmore ran out to an 8-0 lead in the opening 11 minutes of play before Greenamyre got Castleton into the scoring column with 18:09 to play in the opening half. The goal would be all Castleton could muster, however, as Skidmore carried a 14-1 lead into halftime before scoring five more unanswered goals in the second half to finish the day with a 19-1 score.

The Spartans are back in action at Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
