CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton women's volleyball team dropped two contests Saturday afternoon, falling to Eastern Connecticut State before dropping a non-conference match against SUNY-Delhi. Both losses came in three-set fashion.
The Spartans (4-12, 0-4 LEC) lost to EastConn (11-5, 3-2 LEC) 25-23, 25-9, 25-8 before suffering a 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 loss to SUNY-Delhi (14-5).
Hailey Martinovich led the Spartans with 14 kills between the two contests.
Lizzie Goodrich contributed 13 kills on the day. Martinovich notched a team-high eight kills in the night-cap against SUNY-Delhi.
Bre MacDuff tallied 34 assists over both matches, including 25 against SUNY-Delhi.
Mackenzie Wade racked up 18 digs, posting 11 against EastConn.
Castleton battled EastConn to a narrow 25-23 decision in the opening set before dropping the remaining two. The Spartans nearly completed a comeback - they trailed 18-12 before trimming the deficit to one before the final point. Goodrich and Martinovich accounted for 13 of Castleton's 21 kills.
Vanessa LeBrun added three kills, while
Maddie Delsignore totaled eight assists.
The Spartans' best effort in the SUNY-Delhi match came in the second set, scoring 19. They trailed 11-5 early before scoring five consecutive. Castleton would go on to keep things close, trailing 18-17 late in the set, but was unable to fend off the Bronco attack. Martinovich and
Jen Halliday posted eight kills apiece, while Goodrich and
Mackenzie Bender had six each.
Castleton returns to action Wednesday, October 13, hosting Keene State at 7 p.m.
