HENNIKER, N.H. -
Alex Benfatti's third shutout of the season lifted Castleton women's soccer to a 1-0 victory in non-conference action at New England College Wednesday afternoon.
Jamie Barrett scored the contest's lone goal in the 13th minute.
Benfatti notched five saves in each half to earn her sixth career shutout. 10 marked the most saves she's made in a shutout effort.
With goals at a premium, Barrett's 13th-minute tally would serve as the game-winner.
Julia Carone collected a pass from
Brytney Moore before dishing to Barrett, who saw an open-net opportunity and converted.
Barrett's goal was one of nine shots the Spartans (5-4-1, 2-1-0 LEC) directed toward Pilgrims (4-8-0, 1-1-0 NECC) goalkeeper Emily Sashko.
Preserving the 1-0 lead, Benfatti came up with a pair of late-game saves in the 86th and 87th minutes. Offensively, Castleton totaled nine shots on goal in the second half, reaching 17 for the contest. Carone and
Kaidin Gauthier attempted four apiece. Total shots were 35-19 in favor of the Spartans.
Castleton returns Little East Conference play Saturday, October 9, hosting Eastern Connecticut State at 1 p.m.
