Women’s Soccer Plays to Stalemate Against Eastern Connecticut

CASTLETON, Vt. - After a hard-fought 110 minutes, the Castleton women's soccer team was forced to accept a tie in their matchup against Eastern Connecticut State Saturday afternoon at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Not many chances were created in this defensive showcase, as each team put just five shots on target through all four frames. The Warriors (4-5-2, 1-2-2 LEC) outshot the Spartans 8-5 in the first half, but were kept off the board thanks to Alex Benfatti tallying her second-consecutive shutout to keep the Warriors off the board. The junior's four shutouts on the season lead all goalies in the conference.

The shot-count swung in Castleton's (5-4-2, 2-1-1 LEC) favor in the second half, with Jamie Barrett, Bella Varisco, Kaidin Gauthier and Julia Carone all getting looks, but the Spartans were unable to find pay dirt and the game would head into extra time.

Each team got off three shots between the two overtime periods, but Benfatti and Eastern's Alexis Tyrrell stood tall, each racking up five saves on the day and ending the game in a 0-0 draw.

Next up for the Spartans is an in-state trip to Northfield to take on Norwich University in a non-conference matchup. Kick-off is set for 12 p.m.
