CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton women's soccer team dominated to the tune of a 7-0 victory over MCLA Wednesday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium. The Spartans scored early and often, with
Jamie Barrett opening the scoring in the first minute before
Rylee Nichols and
Chase Livesey both chipped in with two-goal performances.
The shutout victory marked the fourth in a row for the Spartans (8-4-4, 4-1-2 LEC), wrapping up two full weeks without surrendering a goal.
Barrett's first minute tally set the tone for Castleton's dominance. She collected a rebound off Nichols' shot and tapped it home from five yards out just 58 seconds into the contest. Nichols would go on to net her first of the evening in the 10th minute off a feed from
Julia Carone. The fifth-year forward would strike a second time in the 18th minute, again assisted by Carone. Nichols sits just two points away from 100 in her standout career.
Carone gave Castleton its fourth tally of the evening in the 27th minute via penalty kick to round out the first half scoring.
The Spartans attempted 26 total shots in the opening half, 15 of which were on goal. MCLA (0-12-1) posted one shot on goal.
It was another penalty kick opportunity that helped Castleton record its fifth goal -
Jordan Mattison converted the chance with a well-placed shot in the bottom right corner.
Reigning Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week Livesey rounded out the Spartan scoring with two consecutive goals, just three minutes apart.
Izzy Scott earned the assist on Livesey's first tally, a highlight-reel rocket from 30 yards out, marking her first career point.
Castleton claimed a 26-4 advantage in shots on goal. Benfatti's quartet of saves led her to an eighth shutout.
The team is set to wrap up the regular season at UMass Boston Saturday afternoon.
