DANBURY, Conn. - The Castleton women's soccer team took undefeated Western Connecticut State to double-overtime Saturday afternoon, eventually dropping the defensive battle by a score of 1-0.
Both teams displaying stout defense and strong goalkeeping, neither side found the back of the net until the 107th minute, when Myah Croze delievered the game-winner.
Alex Benfatti, who made a career-high 14 saves in her last outing, turned away 12 WestConn shots. She made five in the second half to maintain the scoreless tie, then tallied two apiece in the overtime periods. WestConn's Karly Martin stopped all five Spartan shots, four of which came from
Rylee Nichols.
Bella Varisco had the other Castleton attempt.
WestConn, who recently received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, earned its fifth shutout of the season.
Castleton steps away from Little East Conference play to travel to Henniker, N.H. for a Wednesday afternoon tilt with New England College. They return to Dave Wolk Stadium Saturday, October 9 to battle Eastern Connecticut State.
