Women's Soccer Ties SUNY Potsdam 0-0

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Castleton women's soccer team saw its second consecutive scoreless tie Tuesday evening against non-conference opponent SUNY Potsdam. Two-time Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week Alex Benfatti made four saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season, and fourth in the last five games.

The Spartans (6-5-4, 3-1-2 LEC) put five shots on goal in the opening half, but weren't able to get one across. Three came in the first 10 minutes of the contest as Bella Varisco notched two attempts and Jamie Barrett added another.

Potsdam (6-8-1) held the offensive advantage in the second half as Benfatti was tasked with making each of her four total saves while Castleton mustered just one shot on goal. The Bears nearly had the game-winner as Emily Metz saw a high-percentage chance from five yards out, but Benfatti's quick reflexes sent the ball over the crossbar.

Potsdam received a pair of corner kick opportunities in the opening two minutes of the first overtime, but weren't able to get a shot off against the tough Spartan back line. Holly Cudmore's long-distance shot in the 109th minute was the lone attempt for either team between both overtimes. It came just after Barrett saw one blocked.

Benfatti exceeded 100 saves on the season, making her the sixth different goalkeeper in program history to reach the milestone in a single season.

Castleton returns to LEC play Sunday, October 24 when it hosts UMass Dartmouth for a 2 p.m. kick-off.
