PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Castleton University women's soccer team settled for a scoreless tie Saturday afternoon against Little East Conference foe Plymouth State. Goalkeeper
Alex Benfatti made eight saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
Benfatti racked up four saves in the second overtime to keep the hopes of a Castleton (6-4-3, 3-1-2 LEC) victory alive, including one in the final minute of the contest. The junior now sports an impressive 0.96 goals against average on the season, allowing just one goal over the last four games.
The Spartans totaled six shots on goal, half of which came from
Rylee Nichols.
Julia Carone,
Brytney Moore, and
Chase Livesey had one each.
Castleton saw the lone corner kick opportunity in the first overtime, taken by
Bella Varisco, but wasn't able to find the back of the net against a stout Plymouth State defense. The Panthers (6-4-2, 2-3-2 LEC) were afforded the only corner kick of the final overtime. They attempted a game-high five in the second half.
The visitors applied the pressure early with Nichols attempting the game's first shot on goal in the 13th minute, followed by a corner kick by Moore. Castleton put four shots on target in the second half, but wasn't able to find one in either overtime period.
Next up for the Spartans is a trip to SUNY Potsdam Tuesday, October 19 for non-conference action. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
