Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stewart, Henderson Lift Men's Soccer to 4-3 Win Over Plymouth State

CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton University men's soccer team earned a 4-3 victory over Plymouth State in Saturday afternoon's rain-soaked affair at Dave Wolk Stadium. Ben Stewart and Jacob Henderson netted two goals apiece to give Castleton its highest offensive output of the season.

Henderson tallied his first of the afternoon in the 13th minute following Noah Swainbank's free kick. The junior headed a loose ball past the outstretched arms of Plymouth State's Nicolas Cornejo to put the Spartans ahead 1-0 early.

It didn't take long for Stewart to give Castleton (4-10-0, 2-4-0 LEC) a 2-0 advantage - he found the back of the net with a highlight-reel diving header off of Stanley Andersen's well-placed centering pass in the 21st minute. It marked Stewart's first goal of the season.

Andres Soto-Burgos notched three saves in the opening half to keep the Panthers (2-9-0, 1-6-0 LEC) off the board.

Stewart's second goal came in the 68th minute as the Spartans utilized great ball movement with quick passes from Adolphe Alfani and Trevor Walker-Clayton. Stewart was there to tap it home from just a few yards out, putting the hosts ahead 3-0.

Plymouth State would respond with their first goal in the 71st minute, but Henderson made it a three-goal contest once again minutes later. He one-timed a deflection from 10 yards out. Henderson now has four goals on the year, two short of the team-lead. He, along with Stewart, earned his first multi-goal game.

Refusing to go away, Plymouth State scored back-to-back goals late in the second half.

Andres Soto-Burgos finished the game with four saves, while Cornejo racked up seven. Total shots were even at 20-20, with Castleton claiming the advantage in shots on goal. Alfani picked up a pair of assists to record his sixth multi-point performance of his impressive freshman campaign.

Saturday's contest marked Castleton's ninth annual Grassroots Soccer Benefit Game. All proceeds from the afternoon went to Vermont-based Grassroots Soccer, which uses the game to connect youth around the world with mentors and resources needed to thrive.

The Spartans are set to travel to UMass Dartmouth Saturday, October 23. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
