Women's Volleyball Falls to Plymouth State on the Road

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team dropped a Little East Conference match to Plymouth State University Friday night, 3-0.

The Spartans (4-14, 0-6 LEC) lost in straight sets, 25-13, 25-10, 26-24 as the Panthers improved to an impressive 19-0 on the season and 7-0 in conference play. Plymouth State had a 48-19 edge in kills, 10-2 edge in aces, 49-32 edge in digs and 47-17 edge in assists. Castleton hit .071 on the night, while Plymouth swung at a .320 rate.

Lizzie Goodrich and Vanessa LeBrun had six kills each for the Spartans, while Hailey Martinovich led the team with 11 digs. Mackenzie Wade added nine digs of her own. Bre MacDuff had 16 assists and one ace, while Cailin Moskow added an ace for Castleton with three digs.

Emilee Flanagan racked up 11 kills for PSU, with Nora Ryan adding nine and Lilli Stogner eight. Flanagan also had two solo blocks and four digs on the night. Alexa Price had a team-leading nine digs in the match for the Panthers in addition to 36 assists.

After the Panthers cruised to a pair of quick victories in the first two sets, it appeared they were rolling to an easy third-set win with a 19-11 lead late in the frame. Castleton rattled off six of the next seven points, however, closing the gap to just three points—20-17. Plymouth grabbed a point to make it 21-17, but five straight points by Castleton gave the Spartans their first lead of the set, capped by a kill from LeBrun. The Panthers tied the set at 22-22, but another kill by LeBrun and a mis-communication by Plymouth's offense led to a 24-22 lead for Castleton. The Panthers took over from there once more, however, notching four straight points to erase the deficit and claim a 26-24 win in the third set to close out the sweep.

The Spartans are back in action Wednesday night at SUNY-Cobleskill at 7 p.m.
