COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match at SUNY-Cobleskill Wednesday night, falling in each of the first two sets before forcing a fourth set with a third-set victory.
The Spartans (4-15) fell by a final score of 3-1 as SUNY-Cobleskill (8-11) took the match by scores of 25-20, 25-12, 15-25, 25-22. The stat sheet was nearly even, with Cobleskill holding a slight edge in kills, 44-40, assists, 38-37 and digs, 65-62. The Fighting Tigers hit .230 as a team, while Castleton hit .126 as a group.
Hailey Martinovich had a season-high 16 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double, while
Lizzie Goodrich added eight kills and
Jessica Trudeau seven. Martinovich's 50 attack attempts tied for ninth-most in a single match in program history.
Bre MacDuff had 33 assists and a pair of aces for the Spartans, while
Cailin Moskow racked up four aces for Castleton.
Mackenzie Wade had 16 digs, and
Jen Halliday added 14 digs.
The Fighting Tigers were led by 15 kills from Alexis Miranda and 10 from Jillian Nitchman. Miranda added two solo blocks and a block assist. Maleigha Ellithorpe had 35 assists, and Mackenzie Larson had seven service aces.
After dropping the first two sets, Castleton extended the match with a third-set victory to close the gap to 2-1 overall. Castleton built a five-point lead, 13-8, but Cobleskill stormed back with five unanswered points to knot the score at 13-13. The two sides traded points to a 17-15 Castleton lead before the Spartans rattled off eight straight points to end the set, 25-15. The eight-point run featured two aces by Halliday and four kills by the Spartan offense.
Castleton is back in action Sunday afternoon for a tri-match with UMass. Dartmouth and MCLA. Castleton's matches are at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., with UMass. Dartmouth and MCLA playing at 3 p.m. in a neutral-site matchup.
