Men's Basketball Toppled by University of Saint Joseph

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's basketball team's return to Glenbrook Gym was foiled Monday night as the Spartans fell by a final score of 87-41 to University of Saint Joseph.

The Spartans fall to 1-11 with the loss while the Blue Jays improve to 10-2 with their ninth consecutive win. The Spartans shot just 33.3 percent as a team, making 16-of-48 from the floor, while Saint Joseph shot 57.6 percent, going 34-for-59. The Blue Jays knocked down a staggering 15 threes, finishing the night at 53.6 percent from long range. Castleton made just 3-of-14 from distance (21.4 percent). The Blue Jays dominated the glass, hauling in 48 rebounds to Castleton's 19, though Castleton held an edge in turnovers with just 13 to USJ's 17.

Amadou Diakite and Remy Brown tallied double-digit point totals for Castleton, with Diakite's 13 points leading the team. Diakite was 6-of-14 from the floor and added two rebounds. Brown finished with 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting and led the team with four rebounds. Casey Belade added five points off the bench and was 1-of-2 from three, while Denis LeCours tallied four points off the bench and was 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.

Delshawn Jackson, Jr. led all players with 29 points, shooting 10-of-15 from the field and making 8-of-11 from three. He added five rebounds and five assists in addition to two steals. Tyree Mitchell was the only other double-digit scorer for the Blue Jays, notching 10 points on 4-of-6 from the field. 13 different players scored for USJ, while Jake Sullivan and Kumar Brown had a team-high seven rebounds each.

The two sides battled early, with Castleton trailing by just three—11-8—after the first four minutes when Igor Almeida finished a layup at the rim. From there, the Blue Jays went on an 11-0 run that spanned nearly seven minutes, capped by a three from Mitchell. Diakite stopped the bleeding with a three of his own, but a quick 9-0 run from Saint Joseph pushed the visitors' lead to 20 points, 31-11. The lead extended to 22 points by halftime, 43-21, despite a last-second layup by Demauriaye Smith.

After the two sides traded baskets on the opening possessions of the second half, the Blue Jays again used a lengthy run to extend their lead. Leading 50-27 with 17:29 to play after a pair of Spartan buckets, Saint Joseph rattled off 21 consecutive points over a six-minute span to take a 71-27 lead. Castleton stopped the run with a jumper from Belade. The two sides traded scores the remainder of the contest, as the horn sounded on an 87-41 final score.

Castleton returns to action with the second game of a three-game homestand when it hosts Plymouth State at 7:30 p.m. in Little East Conference action.
