Men's Basketball Downed by Anchormen Late

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Castleton University men's basketball team gave Rhode Island College a run for its money Saturday afternoon, but fell short by a final score of 64-52 in Little East Conference action.

The Spartans fall to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play while Rhode Island College improves to 10-3 and 3-0 in conference play. The Spartans outshot the Anchormen, finishing the day at 34.7 percent (17-of-49) from the floor while RIC shot 33.8 percent (23-of-68). The biggest difference came from behind the arc, as RIC knocked down 12-of-48 (25.0 percent) to Castleton's 3-of-17 (17.6 percent). Castleton won the rebounding battle, 46-38, but also committed 18 turnovers to RIC's six.

Remy Brown's 12 points led Castleton as he shot 4-of-13 from the floor. Igor Almeida added nine points and six rebounds, while Oluwadare Sowunmi had seven points—all on free throws. Amadou Diakite and Demauriaye Smith had six points each, with Diakite hauling in six rebounds as well.

Keyshaun Jacobs led all players with 23 points on 8-of-23 shooting, followed by Deyshawn Tengbeh with 15 points. Tengbeh also had two blocks and a steal defensively. After being held scoreless in the first half, the LEC's leading scorer, Shion Darby, managed 11 points in the second half to finish the day 3-of-13 shooting. Benjamin Vezele pulled in a game-high 11 boards for the Anchormen.

Castleton got off to a hot start, scoring the first five points of the game on a three from Brown and a jumper by John Walsh. The lead extended to nine points—11-2—when Brown dropped in a layup with 15:05 to play. After an Anchormen layup, Diakite hit a jumper to push the lead back to nine points—18-9. Rhode Island College whittled away at the lead the remainder of the half, but Castleton held firm and carrier a two-point edge into the break, 30-28, after a late jumper by Smith.

The Spartans continued to lead through the opening minutes of the second half, but a three by Jacobs gave Rhode Island College its first advantage of the day—35-34. The two sides battled closely over the next 10 minutes, but the Anchormen slowly opened up their lead over Castleton. The lead hit double digits for RIC with just under seven to play when Tengbeh hit a three to make it 57-47 in favor of the Anchormen. Castleton got no closer as Rhode Island college closed out the game with a 64-52 win.

Castleton returns to Glenbrook Gym Monday night at 7 p.m. when it hosts University of St. Joseph (CT) and its legendary head coach Jim Calhoun.
