Men's Hockey Outlasted by #9 Babson

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Nationally ninth-ranked Babson scored three goals in the second period and two more in the third as it ran away with a 6-1 win over the Castleton University men's hockey team on Friday.

With the win, Babson improves its nation-best unbeaten streak to 15 games (13-0-2). The Beavers face-off with first-ranked Norwich on Saturday as the top two teams in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) standings.

Calvin Moïse scored the lone goal for the Spartans to keep pace in the conference rookie scoring race with 16 points to sit atop the table with New England College's Jhuwon Davis, who also scored on Friday night. Junior Glenn Wiswell and senior Jacob Erwin assisted.  

For Babson, the team's leading scorer, Ryan Black, had a goal and an assist as six different players scored in the balanced attack. Ryan Campbell and Patrick Flynn also had multi-point nights with two assists each. Trevor Marcinick, Matt Wiesner, Nick Rosa, John Corrigan, and Brendan Casey all scored once for the hosts.

Castleton's losing streak stretches to six consecutive, as the Spartans sit 5-14-2 (3-10-1 NEHC) with four games remaining. Babson is 15-3-2 and 10-2-1 as it puts the streak to the test tomorrow with the Cadets. The Spartans are at UMass Boston on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.   

Castleton had the momentum to start the game and had a 5-1 lead in shots over the opening 4:18 of play. The teams played back-and-forth until the Beavers went to the power play for the first time with 5:11 left in the opening period. The power play resulted in just one shot but swung the momentum in favor of the host for good.

Marinick cracked the scoreboard first when he got open in the slot and got a pass from the corner from Christian Faggas before ripping a wrist shot over the glove of Spartan starter Kyle Alaverdy. 

Babson came out with a flurry in the second period, scoring three goals in the opening 7:20 of play, including two on the power play. After Castleton made it a 4-1 game, Babson scored twice more to close it out in the third period.   

Kyle Alaverdy started and lasted 7:20 into the second period after surrendering four goals. Brandon Collett went the rest of the way in goal for Castleton and gave up a pair of tallies with 17 saves. Brad Arvanitis picked up his sixth win of the year between the pipes for the Beavers after turning aside 24 shots.

The Babson power play connected twice on three opportunities while Castleton came up empty on all their of its power-play chances. 

The Spartans are still one point clear of Suffolk for the eighth and final NEHC playoff spot with four conference tilts remaining after the Rams dropped a 5-3 decision to New England College.
