Men's Basketball Defeated by Southern Maine, 81-67

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University men's basketball team dropped a Little East Conference matchup to Southern Maine Saturday evening by a final score of 81-67 at Glenbrook Gym.

Castleton drops to 1-13 overall and 0-5 in league play, while Southern Maine moves to 6-8 on the year and 1-5 against LEC programs. Castleton outshot Southern Maine percentage-wise, making 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field. The Huskies knocked down 29-of-65 (44.6 percent) and were an impressive 18-of-44 (40.9 percent) from three. Castleton made just five threes and finished at 50.0 percent from behind the arc. The Spartans also knocked down 16-of-21 at the free-throw line, while USM made 5-of-8. Castleton won the rebounding battle 34-32, but turned it over 13 times to USM's four. The Huskies capitalized, converting the turnovers into 21 points.

Remy Brown had a team-high 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, followed by Amadou Diakite with 13 points. Brown came up one board short of a double-double as he grabbed nine rebounds in the outing. Demauriaye Smith had 11 rebounds in addition to his six points, and Nate Plaisted finished with nine points and five assists. Oluwadare Sowunmi also had seven points in 19 minutes.

The Huskies were powered by 28 points from Jaire Roberts, as he knocked down 10-of-15 from the field, including 8-of-13 from three. He also had 10 rebounds to complete the double-double on the day. Jacobe Thomas added 15 points for the Huskies, while Keenean Hendricks had 13 points and seven assists. Derek Haney added nine points with Kylani Lafleur adding seven off the bench.

The Huskies ran out to a big lead early behind the three-point prowess of Roberts, leading 17-7 after just six minutes of play. Castleton cut into the lead after a three by Brown and a layup by John Walsh, making it 23-17 with eight minutes to play in the half. The lead got as small as five points on two occasions for USM, but Castleton was unable to draw any closer before the break as the Huskies went into the locker room ahead, 32-26.

Castleton came out firing early in the second half, drawing within three after a 4-1 run to open the stanza. That was as close as the Spartans would come, however, as USM went on a 12-0 run over the ensuing three minutes to pull away, 45-30. Southern Maine continued to bury threes, extending the lead to as many as 20 points after DJ Anderson buried a triple with just less than seven minutes to play. Castleton got the final points of the game as D'Andre Daniel hit a corner three on Castleton's last possession, but it was not enough as Southern Maine took the win, 81-67.

Castleton returns to action Wednesday at UMass Boston at 7:30 p.m.
