Box Score

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Dom Kuziak scored twice and Alex Maunula had a goal and an assist as the Castleton University men's hockey team scored five unanswered goals to defeat Johnson & Wales on the road, 5-1.

The Spartans improve to 5-8-2 and 3-4-1 in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC). With the win, Castleton has already surpassed its win totals in both columns from last season with 10 games still to play. Johnson & Wales falls to 3-10-0 (0-7-0 NEHC).

The Wildcats drew first blood just 84 seconds into the contest when Logan Orem scored on a rebound with assists from Matt Bernot and Tyler Piekarski.

Maunula tied it at one at the 6:46 mark on the power play. Glenn Wiswell and Troy Taylor had the assists. Then, Calvin Moïse scored the eventual game-winning goal with 1:25 left in the first period on feeds from Maunula and Kyle Kazeroid. All five Spartan players on the ice touched the puck on the regroup before Moïse put the finishing touches on the rush through the middle.

Kuziak scored the first of his back-to-back tallies at the 17:05 mark for the only goal of the middle frame. Sam Rennert collected the primary assist after causing a turnover behind the JWU net and feeding Kuziak in the slot. Kuziak got his second of the night at 9:17 of the third while the Spartans were shorthanded. Taylor snagged his second assist after grabbing a loose puck in the Castleton end and flipping it to a rushing Kuziak past the Wildcat defense for a breakaway. Jacob Erwin scored with an empty JWU net to complete the scoring.

The Spartans finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Wildcats were 0-for-4 with a shorthanded goal-against while on the man-advantage.

Brandon Collett earned his second straight victory, third overall, with a 19-save performance for Castleton. Mike Rockwell Jr. made 29 saves in the effort for Johnson & Wales, as it remains pointless in the NEHC and is set to host nationally fourth-ranked Norwich on Saturday.

Castleton will travel to Suffolk on Saturday for a new start time of 5 p.m.
