Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. -- After earning the win last night against Plymouth State at Spartan Arena, the Castleton University women's ice hockey team hit the road Saturday afternoon to take on New England College in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) contest. The Spartans used goals from Sophia Vingi and Casey Traill as the team defeated the Pilgrims 2-0 at Lee Clement Arena. With the win today, the Spartans improve to 7-5-0 (7-2-0 NEHC) while the Pilgrims fall to 0-10-0 (0-8-0 NEHC).
For the second straight game, the Spartans opened up the scoring in the first period. Vingi connected on a Samantha Lawler pass and scored her second goal of the season to give the Spartans the lead at the 1:36 mark of the period.
After a scoreless second period, the Spartans tallied a second goal with 13 seconds left in the third period. While the Pilgrims were on the power play, Traill scored a shorthanded goal to solidify the win for the Spartans. With her goal in today's contest, Traill leads all Spartan defenders with four goals through 12 games this season.
Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill as the Spartans were held scoreless on seven power play opportunities while the Pilgrims failed to score in their four attempts.
Katlyn Hathaway, starting in her first game as the Spartans' netminder this season, earned her first career shutout win as she stopped all 25 shots on goal.
Women's ice hockey returns to action on Tuesday, December 10 as it travels to take on Utica in a rescheduled non-conference contest. The puck is slated to be dropped at 7 p.m.
