Slow Start Sinks Men's Basketball at UMass Boston

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Castleton University men's basketball team fell behind early and was unable to recover Saturday afternoon, dropping a Little East Conference contest at UMass Dartmouth, 87-60.

Castleton drops to 1-6 with the loss overall and 0-2 in LEC play, while UMass Dartmouth is now 7-3 on the year with a 2-1 mark in conference action. Both teams shot north of 40 percent on the day, with the Corsairs shooting 47.9 percent (34-of-71) and the Spartans shooting 43.8 percent (21-of-48). Castleton shot the lights out from three-point range, knocking down 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from distance. UMass Dartmouth was an efficient 33.3 percent from three, however, making 11-of-33 in the contest. The Corsairs dominated the glass 47-23, taking full advantage of the extra possessions to the tune of 21 second-chance points. UMass Dartmouth also cashed in on 28 points from 19 Spartan turnovers, while Castleton managed 15 points on 17 Corsair miscues.

Castleton received a team-high 19 points from Terrin Roy in 22 minutes off the bench. Roy shot 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from three while grabbing three rebounds. Casey Belade hit a pair of threes as part of an eight-point day, while Nate Plaisted, Igor Almeida and Remy Brown had six points each. Brown, Demauriaye Smith and Oluwadare Sowunmi tied for the team lead with four rebounds.

Adam Seablom dropped a game-high 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-8 from three and a perfect 5-of-5 at the line. He also added five rebounds and five assists in the contest. Marcus Azor reached double digits with 17 points and added seven rebounds, while Taylor Carlson and Matt Valles scored 10 points apiece off the bench. Jake Ashworth grabbed nine rebounds to pace the team.

UMass Dartmouth opened the game on a massive run, opening up a 24-3 lead over the first 6:10 of action. Castleton posted a 7-0 run that spanned two minutes later in the half, cutting the deficit to 35-16, but UMass Dartmouth widened the gap to 50-26 at the halftime break.

Castleton performed better on both sides of the ball in the second half, trading buckets back-and-forth for the final 20 minutes. The Corsairs shot just 41.7 percent in the second half—down from the 54.3 percent mark in the first half—and were limited to 37 points in the final 20 minutes. Castleton shot 43.5 percent in the second stanza and scored 34 points over the final 20 minutes.

Castleton returns to action Tuesday night at Glenbrook Gym when it hosts Fitchburg State in non-conference action.
