Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton University men's hockey team was unable to hold on to three different one-goal leads and, despite being outshot 54-21, tied Bryn Athyn at Spartan Arena.
Brandon Collett made 50-plus saves for the second time in his past three outings; he finished with 51. Glenn Wiswell, Jeremy Laplante, and Nick Gravina scored the goals for Castleton (3-7-2). Gravina and Wiswell had multi-point nights with a goal and an assist each. As did Calvin Moïse, who finished with two assists. Kyle Kazeroid also added an assist.
For Bryn Athyn (5-3-2), Julion Lever, Tanner Congdon, and Alec Grollman accounted for the scoring. Devon Becker, Mike Perkett, Tyler Besner, Jimmy Pollock, and Sheldon Brett all had one assist. Gabriel Couture made 18 saves to stay undefeated on the season at 2-0-1.
Wiswell put the Spartans ahead at the 10:57 mark of the first period to activate the teddy bear toss. All stuffed animals were collected by the Castleton players and will be donated to the Toys for Tots Campaign. Wiswell accepted a stretch pass from Moïse and scored on a deke to the forehand after walking around a defender. Bryn Athyn tied it 2:25 later when Lever got a pass from behind the net and converted on a low wrist shot.
LaPlante scored his first collegiate goal to put the Spartans back up by one at the 6:52 mark of the middle frame. He jammed in a rebound from the top of the crease after the first attempt from Kazeroid was knocked down.
Grollman tied it for Bryn Athyn at the 11:38 mark after when he forced a turnover in the Spartan end and buried the quick breakaway. With four minutes left in the period, Gravina poked in a rebound on the power play to put Castleton a goal ahead again, but the lead held for only 1:48 as Congdon scored on a tip on the power play to complete the scoring.
Both teams had chances in the third period and overtime, but neither was able to get the winner. Collett was tested consistently down the stretch, including a sliding save on a point-blank opportunity with just 2:46 remaining in regulation. He also made seven saves in a Lion penalty late in the third.
Both teams finished 1-for-3 on the power play. The Spartans edged the visitors in the faceoff department, 38-35.
The teams will meet again on Saturday at Spartan Arena at 4 p.m.
