Box Score DELHI, N.Y. – The Castleton University men's basketball team's early-season woes continued Tuesday night as the Spartans fell in non-conference road action to SUNY-Delhi by a final score of 70-60.
Castleton drops to 1-4 with the loss, while Delhi improves to 5-2 on the year. The Spartans shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) as a team, but the Broncos had the advantage by shooting 47.5 percent (28-of-59). Castleton knocked down 37.5 percent (6-of-16) of its threes, while Delhi made 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from long range. The Broncos controlled the glass 37-28, and committed 16 turnovers to Castleton's 18.
The Spartan offense was led by three 11-point scorers, as Remy Brown, Demauriaye Smith and Terrin Roy each reached the mark. Roy also added six rebounds, while Brown and Smith had three boards each. Tyrell Johnson scored nine points with four rebounds, and Casey Belade had seven points and five boards in his first start of the year.
Delhi's Darius Hines led all players with 17 points in 29 minutes off the bench, while Jordan Fragale added 14 of his own on 7-of-10 shooting. Fragale also had seven assits and four rebounds. Justin Daoud led all players in the game with nine rebounds and picked up three steals as well. Mavenson Therneus chipped in 11 points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting.
The two sides traded buckets in the opening five minutes of action as the game was all square at 10-10 after a layup by Roy. Castleton took its first lead of the game on a jumper by Smith before Roy drilled a three to make it 15-12. The lead stretched to 17-12 for the Spartans after Brown hit a jumper of his own, but a three by Hines on the other end of the floor brought it back to 17-15. Following an Igor Almeida bucket for Castleton, Fragale jump started a 9-0 run that put Delhi ahead, 24-19. The Broncos led the rest of the way, closing the half on an 8-0 run to lead 37-26 at the break.
Castleton whittled away at the lead in the first five minutes of the second half, cutting the deficit to just five points after baskets by Belade and Roy. Castleton got no closer, however, as Delhi again extended its lead to double digits at the midway point of the stanza on a pair of free throws by Therneus. The lead reached as many as 14 points just moments later, but Castleton again made a charge late. Roy drilled a three with 1:40 to play to make it an eight-point game—67-59—but the Broncos put the game on ice with a layup by Hines to make it 69-59 before each side closed the game with a free throw, making it 70-60 in favor of the Broncos.
Castleton is off until December 4 when it opens Little East Conference play against Keene State at Glenbrook Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
