Box Score In a back-and-forth battle that came down to the 88th minute, Westfield State finally found the back of the net to secure a 1-0 victory for the Owls.
With the loss, Castleton drops to 0-2 on the young season, while Westfield State improves to 2-0.
Aaron Parker made his first four saves of the contest until the fifth and final shot of the game cleared the goaline. The Owls finished with five shots and eight corner kicks en route to the 1-0 victory.
Freshman Jack Kingdon led the Castleton offense with three shots on goal, including a golden opportunity early in the second half on a long breakaway attempt. Kingdon broke through the defense and sprinted down the middle of the field all alone but the shot would be denied by Westfield State goalkeeper Marc Patnaude, who tabbed a six-save shutout for the Owls.
Despite 10 corner kicks in the second half, the Spartans could not capitalize. Strong defense and solid goaltending kept Castleton out of the net for the second straight night.
Sawyer Shane, Parker and Kingdon were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the Husky Fall Classic.
Castleton returns to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they face St. Josephs (Me.) in the 5th Annual Adidas Challenge Cup. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
