Box Score BANGOR, Maine – For the second day in a row, 110 minutes of action was not enough as the Castleton men's soccer team played to a 2-2, double-overtime draw with Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon in the Adidas Challenge Cup at Husson University.
Castleton is now 0-2-2 after the draw, as is Southern Maine.
Mason Thompson and Colby Gay tallied scores for the Spartans in the contest, while Nick Kaiafas and Cameron Rossi-Crete each collected one assist. Aaron Parker stopped six of the eight shots he faced on the day for Castleton in goal to move his season record to 0-2-2.
For Southern Maine, Charlie Mull got the start in goal and played the opening half, making four saves, before giving way to Simon Hulbert for the remaining 65 minutes of action. Hulbert stopped nine shots during his time in net, allowing the game-tying goal for his lone blemish. Hany Ramadan scored USM's first goal, while Mull went from the goal to the field to score the team's second goal of the contest.
The Spartans got on the board first, when Thompson collected his first career goal on an assist from Kaiafas. The Spartans would take the 1-0 advantage into the half, their first halftime lead of the season.
Southern Maine came out of the break firing, scoring back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute. At 54:04, Ramadan took a pass from Julian Zepeda and found the back of the net to draw the game level at 1-1. Just 26 seconds later, Mull found the back of the net on an assist from Taylor Wilbur to give the Huskies their first lead of the game.
In the 60th minute, Castleton would even things up when Gay took a pass from Rossi-Crete and buried the equalizer that would eventually send the game to overtime.
Despite outshooting USM 11-2 in the two overtime periods, the Spartans were unable to find a game-winning goal. Castleton held a 36-13 shot advantage on the day, putting 16 shots on goal to the Huskies' eight. It was a physical affair, as the two sides combined for 38 fouls and one card.
Parker, Dallas Desroches and Derek Blouin were named to the Adidas Challenge Cup All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the weekend.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday when they play host to Keene St. at Spartan Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
