Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Castleton University women's ice hockey team fell behind early and was never able to recover, as Williams College skated away with a 6-0 victory over the Spartans on Wednesday night at the Lansing Chapman Rink.
Castleton falls to 3-6-0 on the season following the loss, while Williams wins its third straight game to bump over .500 and improve to 4-3-0 overall.
Freshman goaltender Alexis Kalm was impressive in net for the Spartans, turning away 51 shots on the night. Six shots found the back of the net, however, as Kalm falls to 1-2-0 on the season. Marissa Anderson made 17 saves between the pipes for Williams to pick up her first career shutout and improve to 3-0-0 on the campaign.
Ashley Pelkey, Sabrina Hosner, and Chanel Tvergyak created offensive chances with three shots on goal each, but seven penalties hindered any offensive rhythm for the Spartans as the Ephs notched a late goal in the first before pulling away in the second.
Castleton got off to a promising start with five of the game's first six shots on goal, but two late penalties shifted momentum back towards the home team, as Williams went on to record 11 of the final 12 shots on goal of the period, including a power-play goal from Olivia Stokes with just under three minutes remaining in the frame. Candace Lu initiated a shot from the point that shifted Kalm to her left, but the redirected shot found Stokes at the near circle, who potted her first goal of the season at the 17:32 mark of the first period to give Williams the 1-0 lead heading into the locker room.
The Ephs pulled away in the second after quick goals from Annie Rush and Emily Krueger extended the lead to 3-0 less than four minutes into the period. Caitlyn Buckley added another at the 9:26 mark of the period, as the Spartans were outscored 3-0 in the middle frame for the second straight game.
Williams kept the pressure on in the third period with 13 straight shots on goal before Castleton answered with a shot on net of its own. Kalm was up to the task, however, keeping the deficit in tact until Sarah Lehman notched a pair of goals down the stretch to secure the 6-0 victory for the Ephs.
Williams finished 2-for-6 on the power-play, while the Spartans were held in check on three opportunities. The Ephs also held the advantage in shots on goal, 57-17.
Castleton returns to action on Saturday for its final game of the 2016 calendar, with a home matchup versus No. 6 Middlebury at Spartan Arena slated for 3 p.m.
