Men's Basketball Uses Balanced Scoring Effort for 58-50 Win

CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University received contributions from several players as the Spartans defeated the Lyndon State Hornets, 58-50, Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game at Glenbrook Gym.

Chad Copeland led Castleton with 12 points, plus he pulled down six rebounds and blocked two shots. Pavin Parrish scored 11 points, Julian Santos finished with 10 points, all coming in the second half, and two steals, and Ben Mrowka hit three three-pointers in the first half for nine points.

Lyndon State (2-5, 1-2 NAC) took a 9-4 lead five minutes into the game as Charles Correa hit two early three-pointers, but Castleton would rally back, scoring six unanswered points over the span of one minute to pull ahead, 20-17. Down by four after a Mrowka three-pointer, the Hornets scored six straight points to take the lead, and then they scored four of the final five points of the first half to go into the locker room ahead at halftime, 29-28.

Copeland hit three consecutive baskets to start the second half, but Correa responded with back-to-back three-pointers to put Lyndon State back on top, 35-34. The game went back-and-forth for the next five minutes, but after a layup by Darnay Gray put the Hornets ahead, 41-39, the Spartans scored 12 straight points, seven of them by Santos, to take the lead for good.

The Hornets put together one final rally, starting with a three-pointer by Eric Vargas and capped by four straight points from Gray to close to within three at 53-50 with 1:43 left in regulation. Castleton prevented Lyndon State from scoring the rest of the way and hit 5-of-6 free throw attempts in the final minute to close out the contest.

Correa shot 8-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-9 from behind the three-point line, as he notched a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Gray finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. As a team, Lyndon State shot 31.1 percent (19-of-61) from the field, including 5-of-21 from behind the three-point line, and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

Castleton hit half of its second half field goal attempts to finish at 44 percent (22-of-50) from the field, including 5-of-20 from behind the three-point line, and 60 percent (9-of-15) from the free throw line. The Spartans scored 16 points off 16 Hornet turnovers, overcoming a 45-30 rebounding disadvantage in which Lyndon State scored 18 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds.

Castleton (7-2, 4-1 NAC) does not play again until it begins participation in the SUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, facing Stevens Tech Thursday, Dec. 29, at 5 p.m. and host Lehman College Friday, Dec. 30, at 6 p.m. The Spartans return to Glenbrook Gym to host Green Mountain Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at 1 p.m.
