Box Score Middletown, R.I. – The Castleton University women's ice hockey team put one in the win column on Saturday night, edging Salve Regina by a final score of 2-1 at Howard Rink.
With the win, Castleton improves to 1-2-0 on the young season and 1-1-0 in NEHC play, while Salve Regina falls to 0-4-0, 0-2-0.
Salve Regina skated to an early lead after notching the game's first goal just 3:36 into the contest, when Taylor Chilsalm received a feed from Meredith Peppes and snuck one past the outstretched Rachael Brazil to go up 1-0. The advantage did not last long, as Castleton responded quickly with a goal of its own just three minutes later.
Lisa Kilroy started the scoring for Castleton just over six minutes into the contest, tying the game at 1-1 on the power play with helpers coming from Ally Brandland and Hannah Wright. The power play goal was Kilroy's second of the season. Both net minders were active the rest of the way, each stopping 18 shots in the period to head into the first intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
A pair of opportunities on both ends of the ice opened up middle stanza, before Kilroy was involved in the Spartans offensive pressure again. This time, the senior was on the assisting end of a Chanel Tvergyak goal that put the Spartans up 2-1. Kilroy picked up a loose puck and found the waiting tape of Tverygyak, who then took care of the rest to hand the lead over to Castleton just 4:30 into the period.
Tvergyak's first goal of the sesaon proved to be the difference, as Brazil and the defense shut down Salve Regina the rest of the way. Following a late Castleton penalty, the best chance for the Seahawks came in the final minute, pulling their goalie for the 6-on-4 advatange. The Spartans defensive unit had other plans, however, keeping Brazil clean and securing the 2-1 victory.
Brazil was active all night between the pipes, denying a career-high 37 shots in the win for Castleton. On the other side, Jennifer O'Connell also recorded 37 saves in the contest, despite falling to 0-4-0 on the season.
Castleton finished one of four on power play opportunities, while keeping Salve Regina off the board in four power play chances for the home team.
Kilroy led the offense with a goal and an assist, while Brandland, Wright, and Tvergyak each picked up points on the afternoon.
Castleton returns to action on Friday night for its third straight NEHC matchup, with Plymouth State coming to town for a 7 p.m. faceoff at Spartan Arena.
