Box Score WENHAM, Mass. – The Castleton women's soccer team pushed its season-high winning streak to three games on Wednesday afternoon as it defeated Gordon in a non-conference match on the road.
Castleton improves its winning percentage to .500 for the first time all season with the win as the team now sits at 6-6-3 overall. Gordon falls to 6-6-1 with the loss.
Bronwen Hopwood tallied the only goal of the contest early in the second half, while Jessica Binkowski stopped all four shots she saw en route to her third shutout of the season for the Spartans. Kali Denty suffered her fifth loss of the season in net for Gordon, allowing the one goal while making four saves.
After a scoreless first half in which each squad registered two shots on goal, each side came out looking to make a splash in the second stanza. The Spartans made that splash, as Shelby McLenithan carried the ball deep into the Fighting Scots' territory. McLenithan then sent the ball towards the middle of the six-yard box where it was deflected to Hopwood who finished the ball into a wide-open net for the first lead of the game for either side.
Gordon increased its pressure following the Castleton goal, attempting nine of its 15 shots in the game after getting in a 1-0 hole. Binkowski and the rest of the defense stood tall, stopping each opportunity by the home squad to keep the narrow lead through the final whistle.
Gordon held a 15-10 advantage in total shots, though Castleton outshot the Fighting Scots 5-4 on goal. The home side also had a 2-0 edge in corner opportunities on the day, and each team committed six fouls.
Castleton resumes play next Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Johnson St. for a North Atlantic Conference match.
