Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Castleton's women's hockey team bounced back from its first New England Hockey Conference loss of the season on Friday night with a 2-1, come-from-behind victory against UMass.-Boston on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (13-3-2, 8-1-1 NEHC) needed overtime to collect their 13th win of the season, scoring just 34 seconds into the extra period. Aimee Briand buried the game-winning goal for Castleton, moving her season total to five. Taylor Steadman scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the final frame to force overtime, while Jess Cameron stopped 36 shots in the victory.
After a scoreless first period, the Beacons (9-9-0, 7-3-0 NEHC) broke into the score column for the first time early in the second stanza. Jenny Currie took a pass from Kristen Embrey and beat Cameron the give the home team a 1-0 lead at 3:21 of the period. UMass.-Boston controlled the shot total in the period, but Cameron made 13 saves in the middle frame to keep it at 1-0 going into the second intermission.
Trailing by a goal mid-way through the third period, Steadman found the back of the net on an assist from Morgan Richard to draw the game even at 1-1 with 7:17 to play in the contest. Castleton had looks to win the game late in the period, as it outshot the Beacons 9-7 in the final frame, however the final horn sounded to send the game to overtime.
Early in the overtime period, Rachel Bombardier won a loose puck in the corner and skated it behind the net. The senior sent a pass to the far post, where Briand was waiting to drive it over the pad of the Beacons' goalie to give her squad the victory.
Cameron picked up her 13th win of the season in the game, stopping 36 out of 37 shots in the game. For UMass.-Boston, Rachel Myette made 21 saves while moving to 7-5-0 on the season.
Both teams were unsuccessful on the power play, with Castleton going 0-4 and UMass.-Boston going 0-2. The Beacons held a 37-23 shot advantage, while Castleton won 27 out of 50 face-offs.
The Spartans are back in action on Friday, when they travel to Holy Cross. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
