NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Castleton's women's soccer team snapped its four-game losing streak this afternoon with a 1-0 victory over the MCLA Trailblazers in non-conference play.

The Spartans outshot the opposition 17-7 and held the edge in corner kicks 12-2. Mallory Costello scored her sixth goal in as many games, while Bronwen Hopwood collected her first career assist as the squad improved to 2-4 on the season. MCLA, meanwhile, drops to 1-4 overall after losing its fourth straight contest.

With less than 15 minutes remaining in a scoreless, tight-knit affair, Costello found the back of the net for the second straight game to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Hopwood dribbled down the center of the field past multiple defenders before feeding a through ball to Costello in the box. The senior attacker then slipped past a Trailblazer before finishing the ball into the lower left corner of the net to put the visitors ahead by one.

That goal deeemed to be enough, as the Spartans held off a late push from MCLA that included two shots to capture a 1-0, shutout victory.

In net, Jessica Binkowski picked up her second win and first shutout of the season after producing three saves in 90 minutes of play. Kathryn Daly (1-4), meanwhile, made eight saves in the losing effort.

Castleton opens conference play this Saturday at 3:30 pm when it travels to Lyndonville, Vt. to take on the Lyndon St. Hornets.
