Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – Castleton completed the season sweep over the Colby-Sawyer Chargers this afternoon with a 17-0 victory at Kelsey Field in non-conference play.
The Spartans have now won eight of their last nine contests, and with this win, they've notched seven straight wins against Colby-Sawyer dating back to last season. Castleton stands at 17-8 on the year, whereas the Chargers remain winless at 0-20 overall.
In his first start of the season, Mike Labeau picked up the victory after tossing five innings of shutout baseball with five strikeouts. Southpaw Aaron Smith along with Devin Hayes and Sam Spencer combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief to preserve the shutout. Mike Peters, meanwhile, gave up seven earned runs with eight hits allowed in the losing effort.
Nate Swahn had a career day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one home run, three doubles and seven RBIs. Mike Ferro went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, whereas Zach Bahan and Nick Swim provided two RBIs apiece.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bahan flew out to left field, allowing Taylor Vile to come home for the first run of the ballgame.
The away side continued to pose a threat at the plate, and in the following inning, Swahn drove a double to right center to score Ferro and push Castleton's lead to two.
In the top of the third, Bahan was at it again, as he brought home Tyler Lord with a single to left, and Ferro recorded an RBI later in the inning when Vile scored on his fielder's choice. Swahn capped off the scoring in the third with a three-run home run to left to give the Spartans a 7-0 lead.
Swim added a two-run home run in the top of the fourth before Ferro and Logan Whelton-Pane scored in the following frame to give the visitors an 11-run advantage.
Castleton's bats didn't slow down in the sixth and seventh, as the squad produced six runs in those frames. In the sixth, Swahn picked up three more RBIs with a bases-clearing double to right center field. Lord then scored an unearned run to lead off the seventh, and Ferro knocked a two-run single to right later in the frame to make it 17-0.
Spencer kept the Chargers' bats at bay in the final two innings of play, as the Spartans secured a 17-0 victory.
Castleton returns to action this Monday at 4 pm when they host Amherst in non-conference action at Spartan Field.
