Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine – Castleton fell in the opener of today's doubleheader 12-0 before seizing a 3-0 victory in the finale, as the Spartans claimed three wins out of a four-game set this weekend over the Husson Eagles at Winkin Complex.
With today's split, Castleton now stands at 12-8 overall and 5-4 in the North Atlantic Conference, whereas the Eagles, who had previously been undefeated in conference play before this series, moves to 17-11 overall and 13-3 in the conference.
In game one, the Eagles outhit the Spartans 11-6 and grabbed 12 runs in the first two innings, including a ten-run first, en route to a 12-0 victory.
Scott Michaels picked up his first career loss after allowing seven hits and ten earned runs in 0.2 innings pitched. Matt Ravey relieved Michaels and tossed 1.1 innings of two-run (zero earned) baseball before Ethan Hanson, Joey Gratton and Aaron Smith finished the final four innings of play with no runs allowed.
Ben Walls, meanwhile, improved to 3-1 on the season after tossing a complete game shutout with five strikeouts and just one walk.
Husson wasted little time to make a huge impact in the ballgame, as the squad collected eight hits and ten runs in the bottom of the first inning.
After three straight batters reached base to start the frame, Christian Cornell stepped up and delivered an RBI single to center to plate the first Eagle run of the ballgame. Michaels proceeded with a strikeout and seemed to have gotten out of the jam when he got Jordan Carter to hit a grounder, but Carter was able to reach first, allowing the second run of the inning to score.
In the next at-bat, Seth Freudenberger brought home two runs with a single to center, and Ryan Rebar followed with a two-run double to make it 6-0. However, Husson didn't stop there, as Andrew Curran added an RBI single and JT Whitten provided a bases-clearing double later in the inning to give the hosts' a ten-run advantage after the first inning of play.
The Eagles kept their bats alive in the second, as they manufactured two more runs to push their lead to 12. With the bases loaded and two outs, Brandon Gendreau's grounder forced an errant throw, which allowed a pair of runs to score, making it 12-0 in favor of Husson.
Castleton failed to take advantage of its scoring opportunities by leaving four runners on base in the final two innings of play, as the Eagles claimed their first victory of the four-game set with a shutout win.
In game two, the Spartans captured their third victory of the series following an impressive outing from right-hander Devin Hayes. The sophomore turned in arguably his best performance of the season by limiting Husson to just four hits while striking out six en route to a complete game shutout.
Neither team was able to get anything going offensively until the fourth inning when Zach Bahan belted a solo home run to give Castleton a 1-0 lead. After Jim Buckley and Mike Ferro singled in back-to-back at-bats, Soren Pelz-Walsh picked up his fourth RBI of the season with a single through the left side of the infield that plated Buckley and gave the away side a two-run advantage.
Castleton's lineup continued to produce, and in the top of the fifth, the squad manufactured another run to extend its lead to three. With one out, Nick Swim stepped up to the plate and knocked a double into left, and Dan Errico followed that up with a single to right center that brought home Swim and made it 3-0 in favor of the Spartans.
Those three runs were all Castleton needed, as Hayes limited the opposition to just three hits over the final three innings of play en route to securing the shutout victory.
The Spartans return to action this week when they play a four-game, home-and-home series with the Colby-Sawyer Chargers. The series will begin on Tuesday when Castleton travels to Colby-Sawyer for a doubleheader before hosting the Chargers for a two-game set the following day.
