BANGOR, Maine – A pair of impressive pitching performances from Steven Jurkiewicz and Sam Spencer led the Spartans to a sweep in a two-game set over the Husson Eagles this afternoon at Winkin Complex – 6-1 and 4-3.

With the pair of victories, Castleton improves to 11-7 on the season and 4-3 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), whereas Husson, who had been perfect in conference play, falls to 16-10 (12-2 NAC) overall.

In the opener, Jurkiewicz (3-0) went seven strong with one earned run and six strikeouts while allowing just one walk. The southpaw has now tossed back-to-back complete games with just one run and two walks allowed in those outings.

Dan Whitney (3-1), meanwhile, suffered his first loss of the season after going 5.1 innings with four earned runs and five strikeouts.

Tyler Lord continued his torrid pace at the plate, as the senior outfield went a perfect 4-for-4 in the opener with one RBI and one run scored. Taylor Vile, meanwhile, accounted for two runs and one RBI after going 2-for-3 at the dish.

Castleton wasted little time to get on the scoreboard, plating a pair of runs in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead. Lord and Nick Swim led off the game with back-to-back singles before Dan Errico took four pitches to load the bases. Zach Bahan followed with a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Lord and gave the Spartans their first run of the ballgame.

In the next at-bat, Jim Buckley singled to left to load the bases for the second time in the frame before Tyler Hoare reached first due to an error that allowed Errico to score and gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans looked to add to their total in the top of the third after Bahan's grounder put Errico on third with just one out. Buckley then stepped up to the plate and drove a sacrifice fly deep to left to score Errico and push the squad's advantage to three.

Husson finally got on the board in the bottom half of the inning after JT Whitten recorded an RBI single. Ryan Rebar started the frame with a single up the middle before Andrew Curran struck out. Brandon Gendreau then singled to the left side of the field to put two on with one out.

After a balk advanced the runners to second and third, Whitten stepped up and drove a single towards third base that brought home Rebar, cutting the hosts' deficit back to two. Jurkiewicz was able to get out of the jam with no other damage after he struck out Darik Messier for the third out in the inning.

Castleton tacked on a fourth run the very next inning after Lord picked up his lone RBI of the game. With Vile on second and two outs, the senior outfielder delivered a line drive single through the left side of the infield to plate Vile and make it 4-1 in favor of the Spartans.

Vile and Swim added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth with a pair of RBI singles, as the Spartans held the Eagles scoreless in the final four innings of play to capture a 6-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

In game two, Spencer turned in another impressive display by tossing a complete game with three strikeouts to capture his second victory of the season. Connor Graffam (0-1), meanwhile, suffered the loss after allowing three runs in two innings pitched.

Castleton struggled at the plate in the finale with just two hits in the game. Nate Swahn accounted for both of those knocks, as the senior finished 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored.

Following a scoreless opening frame, Castleton jumped out in front with a three-run inning in the second to take the lead. Bahan was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before Swahn put him in scoring position with a double to center. Buckley then grounded out, and Hoare proceeded with a fielder's choice that put runners on first and second with two outs.

In the next at-bat, Soren Pelz-Walsh was walked to load the bases followed by back-to-back walks that plated Swahn and Hoare. Graffam continued his shaky start by throwing a wild pitch during the next at-bat that allowed Pelz-Walsh to score and gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Castleton added another run to its tally in the top half of the third to push its advantage to four. With two on and no outs, Swahn singled to left to load the bases, and Buckley followed with a grounder to second that plated Errico and made it 4-0 in favor of the away side.

Husson wasn't able to get anything going offensively until the bottom half of the seventh inning when its' bats came alive. Whitten and Christian Cornell lined a pair of singles to start the frame before Adam Wilson was hit with a pitch to load the bases.

After the Spartans were able to get an out at home on a fielder's choice, Seth Freudenberger's grounder caused just enough problems to plate Cornell and give the Eagles their first run of the afternoon. Pinch runner Cam Archer was then able to score on an error to make it 4-2, and Jordan Carter later crossed home on a passed ball to bring the hosts' back within one. However, Spencer was able to get back-to-back groundouts to close the inning and secure a 4-3 victory.

These two squads are back in action tomorrow afternoon, as they finish off their weekend series with a doubleheader. Game one is slated to start at noon with the finale following shortly after.
