Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Castleton's men's baseball team rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull off a come-from-behind, 6-4 victory over the Apprentice School Builders on Thursday evening.
It was a close-knit affair, as both teams left ten runners on base with just eight hits apiece. However, the Spartans recorded three extra base hits and stole four bases en route to capturing their third win of the season. The Builders, meanwhile, fall to 8-4 overall in the losing effort.
Apprentice grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Castleton's starter, Steven Jurkiewicz, was called for a balk with runners on second and third in the bottom of the first.
After the Builders doubled their advantage in the third, Castleton responded with two runs in the top of the fourth. Tyler Hoare singled to left field to start the inning before Nate Swahn drove him home with a double to deep center. Swahn scored shortly after when the hosts' shortstop mishandled Taylor Vile's hit to even the game at 2-2. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Apprentice struck again with a pair of runs to retake the lead, 4-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Spartans got one back when Swahn grabbed his second RBI of the game. With one on and two out, the senior catcher sent a screamer up the middle to score Hoare and cut the away side's deficit back to one.
After back-to-back scoreless frames, Castleton's offense came alive in the top of the ninth. Vile led off the inning with a double down the right field line before Soren Pelz-Walsh brought him home. Dan Errico and Hoare then followed with back-to-back RBI singles to hand the away side it's first lead of the ballgame, 6-4.
Scott Michaels finished off the game by pitching a perfect ninth inning to pick up his first win of the season. Jurkiewicz, meanwhile, received a no-decision after tossing four innings with four runs allowed.
For the Builders, Sam Massie took the loss after giving up three runs in the top of the ninth inning, while Mike Brumfield was given a no-decision after throwing 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and just two earned runs.
The Spartans are back in action twice tomorrow, as they play Apprentice at 2 pm before facing the Tufts Jumbos at 5 pm.
