Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. - Trailing by seven midway through the second half, the Spartans went on a 13-1 run to capture the lead and then locked down on Green Mountain over the final four minutes to secure a 92-80 victory on Saturday afternoon in Glenbrook Gym.
Castleton held Green Mountain to just one field goal and six total points over the final nine minutes while the duo of Carnelius Green and Pavin Parrish were nearly unstoppable. Green finished the game with 20 points and a season-high 18 rebounds, including ten on the offensive end, while Parrish set new career-highs with 28 points and 11 assists, while also pulling down six rebounds and blocking a shot late.
The Spartans scored 20 second-chance points compared to just 11 for the Eagles and got 25 points from the bench to improve to 12-8 and 10-4 in the North Atlantic Conference. Castleton also outrebounded Green Mountain 50-37, including 18 offensive rebounds, while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor. The Eagles shot 43.9 percent overall and went 12-for-34 from downtown as they dropped to 6-13 and 6-8 in conference play.
In addition to Green and Parrish, Rob Coloutti and Joshua Horton were also in double figures. Coloutti finished with 11 points, six rebounds and a block while Horton scored a career-high 16 points, including four triples, off the bench. Alexander Homkey was key down low, grabbing five offensive rebounds and nine overall while scoring eight points.
Green Mountain had four players score in double figures, led by Javier Lugris with 23 points, 12 rebounds and one assist. Cameron Anderson added 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals while Cassius Belfon chipped in with 12 points, four assists and three rebounds off the bench. Boo Agee finished with 12 points and six assists but turned it over five times and shot just 4-for-15.
Coloutti opened the game with a three but the Eagles weren't fazed and came back to take their first lead at 14:30 on a pair of Lugris free throws. Minutes later a 9-2 run pushed Green Mountain in front 26-20 with 11:05 left. Horton connected on back-to-back buckets and layups from Green and Parrish then gave the Spartans a 28-26 lead with 8:20 remaining. Castleton stretched its lead to 41-31 on a triple from Horton at 5:28, before the Eagles closed back within six a minute later. Doug Krouse gave the Spartans a 51-41 advantage with 57 seconds left and Chad Pulver came up with a huge offensive rebound and putback in the final second of the half to provide a 12-point cushion.
Green Mountain came out firing and opened the second half on a 16-2 run over the first 4:12 to grab a 57-55 lead. Castleton eventually took back the lead, 64-62, on a layup by Homkey at 12:30. However, an Anderson shot from beyond the arc jumpstarted a 12-3 run to put the Eagles in front 74-67 with 9:14 in regulation.
Green countered with a personal 6-1 run to pull the Spartans within two and then Coloutti drilled a shot from downtown off a feed from Parrish for the 76-75 lead with 5:41 left to get the crowd on its feet. Parrish followed with four straight to make it a five-point game and Castleton went on a 12-5 run over the last three minutes of regulation to secure the 12-point victory.
The Spartans currently sit at third in the NAC and return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face first place Colby-Sawyer at 5:30 pm.
