Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans led by 13 points at the half and pulled away in the final 20 minutes for a 98-71 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Friday night in Glenbrook Gym.
Castleton committed just seven turnovers and made 15 shots from beyond the arc while shooting 47.9 percent from the floor to improve to 3-3 in the 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Beavers, meanwhile, made 36.5 percent of their shots but went just 4 of 25 from downtown as they dropped to 0-5 and 0-2 in conference play.
Senior Rob Coloutti led four players in double figures on a game-high 26 points with six threes while also grabbing three rebounds and dishing off two assists. Tondi Mushandu came off the bench for a double-double of 15 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Pavin Parrish added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists as 12 different players scored in the contest. Julian Santos Molina dished off a game-high seven assists with seven points as the Spartans finished with 21 assists overall.
Nick Hinton led the Beavers with 20 points and was one of three players in double figures. Eric Berry added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists while Anfernee Dent chipped in ten points and six rebounds off the bench. Alan Young, meanwhile, provided seven points, four rebounds and one block.
The Spartans jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a triple by Casey McGraw in the first 2:30, but UMF trimmed the lead down to 15-13 on a Berry layup and then Dent tied it up on a fast break layup. Ryan Rice gave the Beavers a two-point lead with 9:23 left, but Parrish connected on a triple from the wing and was fouled as Castleton took back the lead. He made the free throw for the 19-17 advantage, jumpstarting a 12-2 run and prompting a UMF timeout with 5:36 left and the guests trailing 31-19.
Dent ended the run with a triple out of the timeout, but Parrish came back with a three of his own to make it 34-22. Six straight by Hinton closed the game to 34-28, but a 10-5 run by the Spartans extended their lead to 44-33 with 10 seconds left. Coloutti then closed out the half with a triple from the top of the arc as time expired to go into the break leading by 13.
In the second, Castleton extended its lead to 55-37 on a triple by McGraw and eventually stretched it to 62-41 on a personal 5-0 spurt by Coloutti with 14:34 remaining. The lead never dropped below 17 points again as the Spartans emptied their bench over remainder of the contest. Freshman Kyle Adams scored all ten of his points in the last eight minutes as the reserves continued to work, pushing the lead to 27-points on a layup by Israel Dudley in the final 30 seconds, which provided the 98-71 final.
Dudley finished with four points, three rebounds and one block during the final stretch, while Ryan Merget added five points, two rebounds and one assist. Paolo Loli, meanwhile, chipped in two points and three rebounds in five minutes.
Castleton is right back in action tomorrow at 3 pm when the team hosts Thomas in Glenbrook Gym.
