Box Score RUTLAND, Vt. – Entering the night as one of five remaining unbeaten teams in the nation, Castleton picked up its seventh straight victory on Friday night, taking down Manhattanville by a final score of 6-2 at Spartan Arena.
Rachel Bombardier scored two goals and tallied an assist in the win, while Lisa Kilroy chipped in with one goal and two assists of her own. Jess Cameron put up a 30-save performance for the fourth time in seven games in the victory.
Following a scoreless first frame, both teams would break into the goal column in the second period. Manhattanville got on the board first, when Kyra Hebert struck a shot from the point on a pass from Katherine Reilly that deflected off the stick of the goalie and into the top of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead just 2:30 into the period.
Eight minutes later, the Spartan offense would come alive—finding the back of the net three times in the span of five minutes to give the team a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. The offensive barrage started when Kilroy buried a rebound in front on assists from Bombardier and Sam Pion to draw the game even at 1-1 midway through the period. Bombardier would push the Spartans in front with a goal at 14:16 of the second period when she scored on assists from Ashley Pelkey and Kilroy right in front of the net. Just 45 seconds later, Hannah Rose would skate behind the net and slide a backhanded shot just inside the post on an assist from Hannah Rose to make it 3-1 in favor of the home squad going into the second intermission.
Castleton dominated the third period once again, scoring three more goals to Manhattanville's one. Taylor Steadman got the scoring started in the period when she forced a turnover in her defensive end, skated the length of the ice and scored top shelf to give her team a 4-1 lead just 1:17 into the frame. Manhattanville would answer back, when Reilly buried a rebound on assists from Karly Kapur and Maeve O'Brien to make it a 4-2 game with just less than 15 minutes to play in the game.
Castleton would get the power-play going late in the contest, scoring a pair of goals with a man-advantage. Bombardier struck first on the power play, deflecting a shot by Hannah Rose into the back of extend the Spartan lead to three goals once again at 5-2. Aimee Briand then wrapped up the scoring in the contest, taking a drop pass from Steadman at the right hash marks and driving a shot through the five-hole of the Valiants' goalie to make it a 6-2 game.
Cameron put on a clinic in net, stopping 30 shots in her seventh victory of the season for the Spartans. Olivia Drew picked up her second loss of the year, allowing six goals on 28 shots and making 22 saves in the contest.
Both teams had six power-play opportunities, with Castleton turning two of the chances into goals. Manhattanville was unsuccessful on the power play, as the Spartans killed off all six chances.
