Spartans Stay Perfect in Conference Play

FARMINGTON, Maine – The Castleton women's soccer team recorded a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon against the University of Maine at Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference matchup.

The win moves the Spartans to 7-6 overall, as they remain undefeated in NAC play with a 5-0 record. Me.-Farmington moves to 3-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in conference play.

Mallory Costello and Shelby McLenithan each netted two goals for Castleton in the victory.

Costello got the Spartans on the board first, opening the scoring at 9:11 when she found the back of the net unassisted. The Beavers answered back just three minutes later to draw the game even at 1-1 when Ashley Gleason found Lydia Roy for the goal.

The Spartans would break the tie seven minutes later, with McLenithan scoring her first goal of the game on a pass from the far post by Nicole Wershoven to break the 1-1 deadlock. Allie Vachon would tack on another Spartan goal when her shot deflected in off the hands of the Me.-Farmington keeper to give Castleton a 3-1 lead. McLenithan would tally her second score of the game on a drive from outside the 18-yard line to make it 4-1 in favor of Castleton heading into the break.

It was more Spartans in the second half, as Costello extended the lead to four goals when she netted one just inside the left post in the 50th minute. Bronwen Hopwood would get on the score sheet for the Spartans as well in the game, tacking on a late goal on an assist from Megan O'Shea to bring the contest to its final of 6-1.

In net for Castleton, Jessica Binkowski tallied six saves in the victory. Sam Hatch and Kiana Thompson split time in net for Farmington, each recording four saves in the defeat.

Castleton outshot the Beavers 23-12 in the contest, while taking eight corner kicks to Me.-Farmington's four.
