Box Score CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team improved its overall record to 2-2 with a 3-0 victory on the road at Norwich. Sarah Carlson scored two goals in the match to help the Spartans to victory.
The Cadets attack created chances early in the game, and in the 11th minute, Alex Frank was able to provide Norwich with its first scoring opportunity, but Jessica Binkowski saved the senior midfielder's shot.
Tiana Cross, who has two goals on the season, produced another chance just minutes later, but Castleton's keeper was able to stop the shot, picking up her second and final save of the match.
Castleton was able to break the deadlock just before half when Sarah Carlson knocked home the first goal of the contest, giving the Spartans a one-goal advantage. The freshman midfielder stepped up and took a free kick, bending the ball over the wall and just off the fingertips of Norwich's outstretched keeper and into the net.
The Spartans attacking display continued in the second half, and in the 65th minute, Castleton was able to double its lead after an own goal. The goal happened when a ball was deflected off a Norwich defender and into the back of the net, giving Castleton a 2-0 lead.
Just 26 seconds later, Carlson extended the Spartans' lead when she notched her second goal of the game, third of the season. The freshman midfielder blew past a Cadets defender and beat the keeper to give Castleton a 3-0 lead.
Overall, the Spartans dominated the match, outshooting their opponents 28-4. In addition, Binkowski recorded her first shutout of the season with two saves.
Castleton will return to action on Wednesday at the Spartan Stadium when they host MCLA for a non-conference match beginning at 7 pm.
