CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton notched its sixth overall and third North Atlantic Conference victory of the season, beating the University of Farmington at Maine, 1-0. Sarah Carlson scored the lone goal of the match to give the home side the victory.
Carlson scored the matchwinner in the 14th minute of regulation when she recorded her fifth goal of her rookie campaign. The freshman gathered the ball five yards outside of the box on the far side, delivering a bending shot that curled into the top corner of the net and gave the Spartans a one-goal lead.
In the 34th minute, Carlson nearly doubled her total when her shot from 20 yards out she clipped the cross bar before being collected by the Beavers keeper, Sam Hatch.
Three minutes later, Mallory Costello played a ball into the middle of the field where Kiley Baran gathered it and sent a shot towards goal that clanged off the near post and was cleared by UMF.
The Spartans forced another save in the 41st minute when Carlson delivered a cross that was curving into net, causing Hatch to make a difficult save in crowded space.
After the break, Castleton's offense continued its high-tempo play, finding open space and creating dangerous scoring opportunities in the final third.
In the 59th minute, Carlson again was just inches from scoring, sending in a strike that ricocheted off the cross bar and back into play.
Nicole Wershoven came close to doubling the Spartans lead in the 63rd minute when Baran found the junior open near the corner of the box and Wershoven sent in a shot that sailed just high and wide.
Nine minutes later, the Beavers had their first real scoring opportunity of the second half when Avalon Amador received the ball in the box and tapped it to Katie Clark who fired a shot right at Castleton's keeper, Jessica Binkowski.
Overall, the Spartans outshot their opponents by 18 and held the edge in corner kicks by three.
Binkowski finished the match with three saves en route to her sixth victory and fourth shutout of the season. Her counterpart, Sam Hatch, dropped to 2-5 after making ten saves in the loss.
Castleton returns to action next Saturday when they travel to Colby-Sawyer for a conference match that begins at 3:30 pm.
