Skidmore Takes Down Spartans 4-0

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Castleton women's soccer team lost a tough match at Skidmore on Tuesday afternoon, falling by a 4-0 margin to drop to 3-4 on the season.

The Thoroughbreds attacked from the opening whistle, taking only twelve minutes to score, as Erin Barry's shot from 25 yards out went in, giving Skidmore a one-goal advantage.

Castleton had its first scoring opportunity in the 25th minute when Sarah Carlson took a shot from the top of the box, but it missed wide.

Seven minutes later, Skidmore doubled their lead when Arena Manning's cross found an open Emily Saliterman whose shot went into the back of the net from eight yards out to give the Thoroughbreds a 2-0 advantage.

The Spartans only other chance of the first half came from Carlson again in the 36th minute, but her shot was off target.

Freshman keeper Olivia Maher came on for the second half and the Thoroughbreds immediately put the keeper into action, taking five shots and forcing her to make three saves in the first 13 minutes of the second.

In the 75th minute, Saliterman was at it again, poking the ball in from six yards out to extend Skidmore's lead to 3-0.

Two minutes later, the Thoroughbreds tacked on a fourth unanswered goal when Nicole Lorusso's through ball found an open Saliterman who knocked it in to complete her hatrick.

Overall, Castleton had seven shots with three on target. Jessica Binkowski played the first half in goal for the Spartans and took the loss, while Maher made three saves in the final 45 minutes of action.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday for Homecoming Weekend when they host Lydnon St. for the first conference match of the season at 4:30 pm.
