Box Score 2 Auburn, Mass. - Castleton earned two wins behind a pair of solid pitching performances and timely hitting from several different batters. The Spartans beat Maine-Farmington 5-1 and 5-4 at Auburn High School in Auburn, Mass. on Saturday afternoon, winning the season series 3-1 after Friday's split.
Tyler Lord finished 4-for-8 and Dan Errico went 5-for-6 on the day from the plate, while Jim Buckley, Matt McNamee, and Errico each drove in two runs to propel the Spartan offense. Four Castleton pitchers combined to allow four earned runs on the day. Jimmy Neal drove in five RBI for the Beavers, finishing with a home run and a double on the day.
In game one, Castleton led off the game with a run in the bottom of the first. Allen White drew a walk, and Errico blasted a double to drive in the run, putting the Spartans ahead 1-0 in the early going.
Farmington tied the game in the top of the fourth, but Castleton answered with another run in the bottom of the frame. After an Errico single, Nate Swahn drew a walk, and Soren Pelz-Walsh drove in the go-ahead score with a single through the left side. The Spartans added two more runs to their lead the next inning, going ahead 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, Macyn Clifford led off the inning with a double and was driven in by Buckley to make it 5-1.
Sam Spencer closed out the game with a strong seventh, allowing one hit but stranding the runner on third. The sophomore hurled seven innings, allowing one earned run on four scattered hits. Spencer struck out three without walking a batter, earning his second win of the season.
In game two, Adam Greenlese took the ball for the Spartans. The senior allowed three earned runs over 5.0 innings, giving up eight hits but striking out six. Robert Gould earned the hold for the Spartans, working the team out of a jam in the sixth, and T.J. Fearon earned his third save of the season with a scoreless seventh.
Castleton trailed twice in the game, but timely hitting from the Spartans brought them back twice. Down 2-0 in the second, Jim Buckley and Tyler Lord ripped back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the game. Trailing by two runs again in the bottom of the fifth, Errico hit an RBI single, McNamee drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Macyn Clifford ripped a double to score the go-ahead run.
With a 5-4 lead, Robert Gould worked his way out of a huge jam in the top of the sixth. With two on and no outs, the freshman came into the game and sat down the only three batters he saw, keeping the Spartan lead and earning the hold as the team took their one-run lead to the seventh.
In the final inning, the Beavers threatened, with Ben Keene ripping a single and advancing all the way to third base. With two outs and a runner on third, T.J. Fearon forced a weak groundout to second base to end the game and earn the save as the Spartans won 5-4.
Castleton improves 11-5 on the year with an 8-1 mark in the conference. The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday, April 9 when they take on Colby-Sawyer in conference play.
