Box Score Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans battled for 12 innings, but came up just short as they fell 3-2 to Plymouth St. on Tuesday evening at Spartan Field. Joe Borowski went 1-for-2 with four walks and a run scored in the loss.
With a runner on third base and two down, Mike LaFlamme slapped a single just past the outstretched glove of Castleton second baseman Taylor vile and into center field to drive home the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning. Castleton couldn't bring around a run in the bottom of the frame and suffered the one-run loss.
Castleton had six pitchers combine to throw 12 innings, allowing just three runs on 12 hits. The Spartan staff stranded 15 runners, forced three double plays, and combined for seven strikeouts. Devin Hayes took the loss for Castleton, allowing the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning.
Plymouth State threw four different hurlers at the Spartans, with Spencer Webb earning the win. The senior tossed three innings, shutting down the Spartans in the extra frames to earn the victory.
After a scoreless first, both teams scored in the second inning to make it 1-1. In the top of the frame, Brandon Cox walked and was followed by Paul Reny who ripped a double down the left field line. Jeff Runnals drove in Cox with an RBI groundout to the right side. Castleton answered in the bottom of the frame with a run. Nate Swahn led off the inning with a single and moved around to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Vile drove in Swahn with a productive out to the right side to even the score.
Plymouth St. took a one-run lead in the seventh when Pat Cannon drove in Reny with an RBI single. Castleton answered in the bottom of the frame yet again, stringing together three hits to drive in a run. Borowski singled to center and Dan Errico ripped a double down the left field line. With runners on second and third, Macyn Clifford lifted a single into shallow center to tie the game at 2-2.
Castleton had several chances to seal the victory with a run in the extra innings, but couldn't manufacture the winning score. In the top of the 12th, Plymouth St. jumped on Devin Hayes opening the inning with a pair of singles. With runners on first and third, Hayes forced Cannon to line out to second base, where Vile doubled up the runner at first. With two down and a man on third, Mike LaFlamme stepped up and dinked a single to center to drive in the game-winning run.
With the loss, Castleton moves to 25-9 on the season and will travel to Norwich on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Cadets, their final games of the regular season. The Spartans will host the NAC Tournament on May 2 as the tournament's top seed.
