Box Score 2 Hampton, Va. – Castleton opened up the floodgates in its first game of the day with a 16-8 blowout of Saint Vincent, but couldn't match that output against a tough Tufts squad as the Spartans fell 7-1.
The team raked 13 hits in the opener while scoring a season-high 16 runs in the opener but were held to just three hits against the Jumbos as Castleton evened its record at 1-1. TJ Fearon earned the victory in the opener as he came on in relief and pitched 4.1 innings while allowed just two hits and striking out a pair.
Offensively a number of Spartans got in on the action, especially Allen White, who went 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs against the Bearcats. Joe Borowski also went 3-for-5 with four RBI while Taylor Vile had just one hit but scored four times.
After giving up a run in the bottom of the first Castleton came back with five runs in the top of the second to pull in front. The Spartans loaded the bases with two outs and got on the board with an error by the shortstop. Allen White followed with a two-RBI single and Borowski kept the inning going with another two-run single to right field for the 5-1 advantage.
An inning later Castleton again loaded the bases. With two down, Vile reached on a fielder's choice to score a run and Tyler Lord followed with an RBI single. Lord and Vile then executed a double steal for the 8-1 lead and White tripled, scoring Lord.
The Bearcats made it a game in the fourth as they scored six times on starter Adam Greenlese. The southpaw loaded the bases with no outs and three consecutive singles cut the lead to 8-4. St. Vincent added three more before Fearon came on to induce a groundout to end the frame.
Castleton found its offense again with a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Borowski for the 14-7 lead. One run in each of the final two frames pushed the lead to 16-7. The Bearcats managed a run in the last of the ninth for the 16-8 final.
In the nightcap, Ryan Crowley singled to shortstop in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Lord and giving the team an early 1-0 advantage.
Tufts came back with a run in the second and the third innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Jumbos added four runs in the top of the fifth for the five-run lead and one more in the top of the seventh made it 7-1.
Chaz Millet and McNamee provided the other two Spartan hits. Samuel Spencer took the loss as he went 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out three and not allowing a walk.
Castleton concludes its road trip when it faces Apprentice at 12 pm.
