Spartans Cruise Past Maine Maritime 104-68

Castine, Maine – Castleton utilized a devastating full-court press and had six players score in double figures in its 104-68 blowout of Maine Maritime on Saturday afternoon in Smith Gymnasium. 

The Spartans forced an impressive 40 turnovers and shot 42.9 percent from the floor as they improved to 12-7 overall and 10-2 within North Atlantic Conference action. The Mariners shot just 26.0 percent overall and 19.0 percent from downtown as they dropped to 1-16 overall and 0-11 in conference play. 

Castleton swiped a season-high 25 steals, the most for any Division III team entering this weekend and scored 37 points off turnovers. Eight different players recorded at least two steals, led by Logan White and Jahnathan Mitchell with four apiece. The 25 steals also matched the program record, set back in 1985 against Lyndon St. 

White was one of six players in double figures and one of 14 to score at least two points. White had 15 points, four steals and two rebounds while Steve Rosemond recorded 11 points and 14 rebounds. Carnelius Green added 13 points, two rebounds and three steals and Cosrick McDonald chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. 

Kyle Boucher was the only Mariner in double figures, scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Dylan Price added six points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. 

Castleton trailed 4-3 but responded with an 8-2 run to take an 11-6 lead with 14:39 left in the half. MMA kept it close over the next five minutes and used an 8-1 run to pull within two, 21-19, at 9:13. Paul Flynn hit a layup for a four-point lead and that jumpstarted an 11-1 run for the 32-20 advantage with 6:54 left. The Mariners cut the lead to nine with 5:35 left in the half, but the Spartans went on a 19-7 run to end the half and go into the break with a 53-32 lead. 

Castleton extended its lead to 65-36 less than three minutes into the second half on a jump shot by Rob Coloutti and made it a 31-point game at 15:44 on layup by Chad Copeland. The Spartans continued to sub liberally over the final 14 minutes on their way to a 36-point victory. 

Copeland was in double figures with 11 points and four rebounds, along with Coloutti, who had ten points. Mitchell was solid in his first career start with nine points, six assists and four steals in just 12 minutes. 

The Spartans look to maintain their second place spot in the NAC standings when they host Johnson St. on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
