Spartans Earn Road Draw at No. 6 Babson

Babson Park, Mass. - Castleton earned an early lead, but found themselves in a 3-2 hole in the final minute of play. Derek Gingera buried a goal with 31 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime, where the Spartans earned a 3-3 draw at sixth-ranked Babson.

Thomas Shelley made 29 saves for the Spartans, including one in the final minute of overtime to keep the Beavers from earning the win. Jamie Murray turned away 26 shots in net for the Beavers as the two teams skated to the 3-3 draw.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, increasing their season scoring margin over opponents in the first period to 10 goals. Nick Kovalchik found Kevin Rosset at the 8:40 mark to put the Spartans ahead 1-0. Six minutes later, Kovalchik notched a tally of his own off assists from Brian Greene and Ross Herzog, putting Castleton ahead 2-0 at the first intermission. 

Babson turned the tables in the second period, dominating play from the first whistle. Mike Driscoll put the Beavers on the board just eight seconds into the frame with his 10th goal of the year. Just past the eight minute mark, Joe DiPietro drew Babson level with a goal, tying the game at 2-2.

In the third period, Babson pulled ahead with another goal. Andrew Bonazza notched his seventh goal of the year to put the Beavers ahead 3-2 with 6:40 left in the game. With time running out, the Spartans needed a hero. With just 30.6 seconds left in the game, Derek Gingera stepped up, burying a goal to tie the game and send the tilt to overtime.

In the overtime period, Castleton had several chances, including a power play opportunity, and outshot the Beavers 5-0 in the first four minutes. With 53 seconds remaining, the Spartans were whistled for a penalty and played a man down for the rest of the game. Thomas Shelley was tested, but made a clutch save in the final minute of play as the Spartans successfully killed off the power play and earned the 3-3 draw.

Castleton moves to 10-9-2 on the season and earns a crucial point in the ECAC East standings. The draw is the first point the Spartans have recorded against Babson since the 2011-2012 season. The squad will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they travel to No. 13 UMass-Boston for their second of three consecutive games against teams ranked in the D3Hockey.com top-15.
