Box Score Rutland, Vt. - The Spartans saw four different forwards tally goals on the evening as the squad skated their way to a 4-2 victory over St. Anselm on Saturday at Spartan Arena. Ben Bauer finished with a pair of assists for the Spartans in the victory.
Thomas Shelley earned his third win of the season in net for the Spartans, piling up 22 saves in the victory. Nick Dries finished with 15 saves and took the loss in net for St. Anselm.
In the first period, Castleton was outshot 7-6 by the Hawks, and took four penalties to St. Anselm's one. The visitors were able to capitalize on the Spartans' penalty woes with a power play goal off the stick of Eric Czapka. The tally put the Hawks up 1-0 just under six minutes into the tilt.
In the second frame, the Spartans flipped the script on the Hawks, scoring on their own power play opportunity. Kyle Pichler scored off of a pass from Ben Bauer to draw the Spartans even at 1-1. The assist marked Bauer's first point of his Castleton career. Under a minute later, Castleton took the lead on a goal from Ryan Frost, his sixth of the year to put Castleton ahead 2-1 with about 11 minutes remaining.
St. Anselm came back to tie the game later in the period. Tommy Evangelista scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Kody Grondin to even the tilt at 2-2 with under five minutes remaining in the second.
In the final minute of the second period, Castleton regained the lead with a goal from Corbin Marcotte. The freshman took advantage of the open ice during a 4-on-4 and beat Dries to put the Spartans up 3-2 with 49 seconds left in the second frame.
In the third period, St. Anselm dominated the puck possession, outshooting the Spartans 10-5, but it was Castleton who took advantage of their chances. Colin Murray tallied an insurance goal late in the third period, intercepting a defensive zone pass and wristing the puck past Dries to go up 4-2. The Hawks pulled their goalie for the man-advantage in the final two minutes, but Thomas Shelley stood strong, keeping the visitors at bay and giving Castleton the win.
Castleton scored on their first power play opportunity in the game, snapping their two-game drought by converting on the man-advantage. St. Anselm finished just 1-for-8 on the power play as the Spartans' penalty kill was nearly perfect on the night.
The Spartans improve to 10-9-1 on the season, and move to 6-6-1 in ECAC East play. Castleton will travel to Boston this weekend to take on Babson and UMass-Boston in a pair of conference clashes. The Spartans take on the Beavers on Friday, Jan. 31 before battling the Beacons on Saturday, Feb. 1.
