Rutland, Vt. - It took an extra frame on Friday to attempt to seperate Manhattanvile and Castleton, but even with the bonus period, the team's remained deadlocked. The Spartans and Valiants skated to a 2-2 draw on Friday night at Spartan Arena.

Paula Stephens finished with 28 saves in net for the Spartans while Dana DeMartino and Kirsten Shaughnessy combined to stop 26 shots. Stephens and Shaughnessy ended the game as the goalies of record.

In the first period, Castleton jumped out in front with a goal from Lisa Kilroy. The Spartans pressured the offensive zone, preventing the Valiants from clearing the puck. Lisa Buratynski pinched the blue line and poked the puck away from a Manhattanville defender to Kilroy who skated into the slot and wristed the puck top-shelf to beat DeMartino.

Later in the frame, Castleton extended their advantage to 2-0. Freshman Kimberly Gosselin won a battle on the boards and kicked the puck back to Samantha Pion waiting at the blue line. Pion ripped a laser slap-shot that found the net to put Castleton ahead by two.

The Valiants came storming back in the second period to even the score. The team made a change in net, turning from DeMartino to Kirsten Shaughnessy, that seemed to energize the squad.

Alla Traun beat Stephens early in the period to make it 2-1. Traun received a long pass from the defensive zone and skated hard to the net. The forward deked left and slid the puck five-hole to cut into the Castleton lead.

With just under three minutes left in the period, Lindsay Diot pulled the Valiants even at 2-2. Michaela Murdock ripped a shot from the point that Diot got a piece of, sending it sliding just past Stephens to draw Manhattanville even at 2-2. The two teams skated into the second intermission still deadlocked.

In the third, Castleton struggled to get the puck into their offensive zone, fending off attacks from the Valiants for nearly the entire period. Stephens was forced to make nine saves in the frame to keep the Spartans at level pegging. The goalkeeper stonewalled a last-minute breakaway as well, stopping Traun with a brilliant kick save to keep the score even at 2-2 and send the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, Manhattanville put two shots on goal but both were turned away by Stephens. Castleton had several chances in the offensive zone, but had several shots blocked by Manhattanville defenders and did not register a shot on net.

With the draw, Castleton moves to 10-7-1 on the season, while Manhattanville moves to 6-9-3. The Spartans will skate again tomorrow at 1:00pm when they play host to Nichols College.
