Box Score Gorham, Maine - The Spartans staved off the Huskies to rebound from their recent slump, downing Southern Maine 3-2 in Gorham on Saturday afternoon. Thomas Shelley made 17 saves to earn the win in net, pushing the Spartans record back over the .500 mark (9-8-1).
Ryan Frost registered his first multi-goal game of the season and Brock Labelle turned in a pair of assists to lead the Spartans' offense. Defenseman Ryan Delorme also tallied a goal as the Spartans knocked off the Huskies. Castleton outshot Southern Maine 21-19, registering their lowest shot total in a victory this year.
In the first period, Castleton jumped out to a very early lead with a goal from Delorme coming in just the second minute of play. With 1:07 on the clock, the defenseman lit the lamp to put the Spartans ahead.
Three minutes later, Frost added to the Castleton advantage, scoring his first goal of the game. The Spartans gained a 2-0 advantage within the first five minutes of the contest, but the Huskies responded before the period was over. With less than five minutes remaining in the frame, Angelo Vrachnas scored to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the second, the Spartans outshot the Huskies 11-5, and were able to extend their lead back to two goals. Frost buried his second goal of the game 5:37 into the period to lift Castleton to a 3-1 lead. Shelley was able to turn away all of USM's attempts in the frame and the Spartans took the two-goal advantage into the second intermission.
In the third, the Huskies did their best to mount a rally, outshooting the Spartans 7-3. Southern Maine cut the lead to 3-2 when Kelby Lorenz ripped a power play goal with 8:35 remaining. Shelley and the Castleton defense held through the rest of the third period, preventing a late meltdown and preserving the Spartan win.
Josh Hillegas made 18 saves for the Huskies, but took the loss as the home team fell to 4-8-5 on the season. Castleton improves to 9-8-1 with a 5-5-1 record within the ECAC East. The Spartans will return to action on Friday, January 24 when they host New England College.
