Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans forced an extra period against Mass.-Boston on Sunday at Spartan Stadium, but were bested by the Beacons as Krista Ledin buried a golden goal in extra time to decide the match.

Castleton fell victim to a late goal for the second consecutive game, falling to 2-2-0 on the season. With the win, the Beacons move to 2-2-0 rebounding from their loss yesterday to Skidmore.

The Spartans nearly got on the board first when Mallory Costello swiped a pass from a UMB defender and moved down the right flank in the ninth minute. The forward crossed the ball across the goal mouth, but the Spartans couldn't put a body on the receiving end, and the pass went begging wide.

The Beacons got on the board first when Tayla Andrews buried a goal in the 16th minute. The senior gathered a pass from Sam Cristoforo at the top of the box and calmly placed it in the top corner to give UMB the 1-0 lead in the early going.

Castleton answered just three minutes later with a goal from Morgan Young. Jessica Phillips crossed the ball from the left side when freshman Dominique Valancius popped it up into the air. Young attacked the ball in the air and launched a half-volley into the side netting to knot the game at 1-1.

In the second half, each team had several opportunities, with Castleton outshooting the Beacons 12-9 in the frame. The Spartans' best chance came on a shot from Jenna Bostwick. The junior launched a shot from the top of the box, but UMB goalkeeper Kristen Spain dove to make a full-extension save, turning away the Spartans' chance to take the lead.

In the overtime frame, the Spartans had one look at goal, but couldn't convert. On a counter-attack, Tayla Andrews beat a defender and dribbled down the right flank. The forward crossed the ball in front of the goal mouth where Ledin cleaned up the play, burying the ball and giving the Beacons the 2-1 win.

Castleton goalkeeper Jessica Binkowski finished with five saves in the loss, while UMB goalie Kristen Spain made three saves in her second win of the season. The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to MCLA.
