North Adams, Mass. - A battered and bruised Castleton side fell 2-1 to Union College on Sunday in the CIAO Classic hosted by MCLA. A handful of Spartans were limited to watching on the sidelines due to injuries as the squad fell to its first defeat of the season.

The Spartans allowed their first two goals of the season in the loss. Before Union scored, Castleton played 314:11 minutes without conceding a score to open the campaign.

In the 15th minute of the contest, Dean Constant broke the Spartan streak with a header off of a Union corner. Kevin Janson crossed the ball into the box where Constant whipped it into the net to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead.

Castleton was able to counter in the 32nd minute when Spencer Dandurand found Jake Tietgens on a through-ball. Tietgens collected the pass and finished it to get the Spartans on the board and tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the first half, Nicholas Hall-Risko buried the game-winner. Nick Vozzella earned the assist as the Dutchmen took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

Castleton was unable to mount a comeback, and parried several Union chances in the second half. The Dutchmen outshot the Spartans 10-2 in the second frame and 27-5 for the game.

Nate Koenemann played outstanding in net, keeping the Spartans in contention with nine saves. He took the loss to move to 2-1-1 on the year. His counterpart, Ryan Carter made a pair of saves to earn the win in net for Union.

The Spartans will look to rebound from the season's first loss when they take on Plattsburgh St. on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at home.
