North Adams, Mass. - After allowing an early goal, the Spartans scored four times, including three second-half marks, to earn the 4-1 victory over MCLA in North Adams on Wednesday.

Freshman Allison Vachon scored twice and forward Mallory Costello dished out three assists to propel the Spartans to their third victory of the year. All four of the Castleton goals were scored by first-year players.

The Trailblazers wasted no time to get on the board, scoring within the first minute of play. MCLA earned a corner within the first 30 seconds, and Kayla Lingel played the ball into the box. Senior forward Jen Ferrari met the ball in the air, striking it with her head into the back of the net, giving the Trailblazers an early 1-0 lead.

Later in the first half, Castleton found an answer to knot the score at 1-1. The Spartans drew a foul in the MCLA half of the field and freshman Nicole Gay struck a booming kick into the box. The ball came loose after a scrum and found the foot of freshman Allison Vachon who slotted it to the back of the net to tie the game with 32:50 left in the first frame.

At the end of the first half, Castleton and MCLA were still knotted at 1-1. The Spartans owned a small shot advantage over the Trailblazers after the first 45, outshooting the hosts 9-8.

After the halftime break, Castleton shook off any doubts, outshooting the Trailblazers 10-3 and notching three goals. It was Nicole Wershoven who broke the seal, scoring off of a cross from Mallory Costello to make it 2-1 in the 65th minute.

It only took the Spartans 41 seconds to add to their advantage. Vachon collected a through ball from Costello and beat the MCLA goalkeeper for her second goal of the day, putting the Spartans up 3-1.

Castleton added another insurance goal in the 82nd minute of play. Kaileen Banks tallied the first goal of her Castleton career after a scrum in front of the MCLA goal mouth. Banks came up with the ball off the foot of Costello and slotted it to put the Spartans up 4-1.

Jessica Binkowski finished the game with four saves to earn her third win of the season in net for Castleton. Her MCLA counterpart Danielle Heinsohn finished with 11 saves and took the loss.

Castleton improves to 3-2 on the season and will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they travel to Rensselaer to take on the Engineers.
